General Care & Instructions for Lucky Bamboo

Feng Shui practice enhances positive Chi and counteracts the negative Chi. Therefore Luck. Fortune and Wealth can be induced. Lucky Bamboo, Money tree are the most popular live plants for this.

The Lucky Bamboo is durable and resilient. It signifies longevity and fortitude and protection from all negative energies.

Placed in the north corner it symbolizes protection. In the east corner it symbolizes wealth and good luck. Place a bamboo on the east side of your work table to generate good fortune.

Lucky Bamboo grows in water just like cut flowers. It will last for years. Water frequently. Change the water every other week. It is not necessary to feed the Lucky bamboo. But if you want prepare "Miracle Grow" (obtained from any nursery) and use that solution once every two months. will provide nutrients to support a more vigorous growth.

Lucky Bamboo does not really need much sunlight. Direct sunlight is not good for it. Naturally. it grows under the canopy of wet tropical rain forests. So it really needs very little direct light. In general the more indirect light the better. Just clean water and tender loving care is all that this plant needs. Soil is not good for it on account of attendant problems like fungus etc. The lucky bamboo can be kept in just clean water or rocks and water. If you use rocks. make sure. that the water is always visible in the pot. Excess water is not a problem. so water it as often as possible.

If you notice browning on the tips of the leaves. consider that the spot you have chosen receives too much sunlight at some point in the day. It also does not keep well with temperature under 60 degrees F. Unless. you live in a tropical rain forest we would not recommend planting the Lucky Bamboo outdoors. The plants will stay green and keep growing leaves. The plants .grow slowly.

 Causes of Yellowing

After considering the possibility of too much light the next factor to consider is the source of the water you are using. If you live in a city where chemicals are added to the water such as fluoride or chlorine or even a high salt content one or a combination of these factors will cause this problem.

Yellowing is first seen at the tips of the leaves and then spreads throughout the whole stalk. until it dies. It is vital to provide pure clean water. So if your tap water is a factor in the yellowing. add an effective filtering system to your tap or purchase good quality water for this Lucky Bamboo. Once you improve the quality of your water: allow time for healthy new foliage to form before concluding that something else must be wrong.

Creating Your Own Bamboo Shoots

To grow new stalks from your original ones. make a clean cut through the stalk. just below a joint. The best time to do this is in the spring. Place the cutting in fresh. clean water with the addition of a few drops of liquid fertilizer. Refresh this mixture once a week. It is also beneficial to spray the stalk with a mild water solution to stimulate new bud growth.

Curly Bamboo is cultured in a special way. The plant normally only grows straight. The growers keep the plant in a greenhouse cover the three sides so that only one side has bright light and let the plant grow naturally towards the light. They manually rotate the plants periodically to produce the curl. It can take a year or more to make one curl.

Asian wisdom proclaims that certain number of stalks
enhance certain positive aspects of life.

  Three stalks attract happiness

  Five stalks attract wealth

Seven stalks result in good health

Twenty one stalks offer a very powerful all-purpose blessing
