Questions and Answers About Candles

Q: How can I get a longer burn time on my candles?
A: Follow burn instructions found on bottom label of candle for maximum burn consumption. Keep out of drafts; avoid  burning candles in a room that is 90F or above. Our burn times are based on scientific burn study data to give you a more accurate level of confidence in our candles' burn performance. Each candle has 80-120 hours of burn performance data, depending on size. Please feel free to compare our burn performance to other candles.

Q: Why do some candles burn black smoke and others do not?
A:   In most cases this occurs because the candle is not being burned according to the burn instructions. The smoke is a result of the wick not being kept trimmed to ¼ inch at all times. There may be a draft in the room that could also attribute to  the “soot”.

Q: How can I get wax out of my carpet?
A:  Take a brown paper bag and place it on top of the wax. Using an iron with steam place it on the bag and allow the wax to soak up into the bag. Repeat as needed until wax is gone.

Q: How do I get wax off my hardwood floor?
A:  Fill a small plastic bag with ice. Place the bag of ice on top of the wax and leave it until the wax is hard. Using a blunt knife pry the wax from the floor. When wax has been removed rub the area with a soft rag to remove any residue.

Q: How do I get wax out of upholstery?
A:  Scrape away as much wax as you can with a butter spreader. Place a brown paper bag on top of the wax. Press the tip of a warm iron gently over the bag until the wax melts and soaks up into the bag. Lift the paper from the fabric as it cools. Dab a small amount of denatured alcohol onto the stain to remove any dye stain if needed.

Q: How can I tell if the wick in a candle has lead in it?
A:  Take a normal piece of white paper and rub the top of the un- burned wick on it. If it leaves a mark like a pencil then the wick core is made of lead.

Q: Why do candlewicks have black balls on the end after burning the candle for a while?
A:  This is the result of unburned fuel at the top of the wick. This is unavoidable in container candles that contain a core. Empire does not use a cored wick thus the black balls “carbon caps” are minimized.

Q: How do I protect the surfaces I place my candle on when burning?
A:  Always follow burn instructions listed on the bottom of the jar and place your candles on a heat resistant surface, such as   a decorative plate or trivet.

Q: How do you remove the metal wick base when you reuse the jar?
A:  Place jar in freezer for 10 minutes and remove the tab using a blunt end knife to “pop” it out.
